The Land Titles Office was transformed from a Victorian Gothic set piece to a cool Modern box in 1957. Altered and remodelled were architect W.H. Shillinglaw's cloister-like arcade of pointed windows running the length of the Princess Avenue facade. Also removed were the tall pilasters topped by finials and the spiky iron cresting which edged the roof line. The building was then sheathed in a veneer of brick and Tyndall limestone. The vertical emphasis of the late nineteenth century made way for the low-lying horizontal of the twentieth.
