This home was originally built by contractor and real estate agent Robert Sword. He lived here for three years before selling the home to Andrew Douglas Rankin, a prominent community member and the proprietor of A.D. Rankin & Co.  Rankin lived here until 1914. In 1925, the house was purchased by George W. Ferguson. Ferguson was a partner in Campbell & Ferguson, a furniture dealer and undertakers establishment (previously Campbell & Campbell). He lived at 436 6th Street for over thirty years.

The 2 ½ storey home features a hipped gable roof with a detailed chimney, gable-shaped and wall dormers, and a turret. The roof is elaborately trimmed with wide eaves, bargeboard, brackets, moulding, friezes, and a decorative gable. The exterior also boasts both an open and enclosed porch with verandah detailing. A decorate brick belt and ornamental windows add an extra decorative touch to the home.
