St. Matthew's Pro-Cathedral was designed by W.A. Elliot and constructed by the firm of William Bell and Son after the congregation outgrew the original St. Matthew's Anglican Church located at the 200 block of 11th Street (the present site of St. Hedwig's Roman Catholic Church). The English Gothic Revival style chosen by Elliot is a carefully molded mass of limestone and brick, with a complex floor plan, a variety of rooflines, crenellations, and tall lancet windows. Arranged in a traditional cruciform plan, the long nave arm of the structure holds the congregation beneath a striking open-timbered oak ceiling. The east arm contains the altar and choir. The short transept arms add symmetry and space. The central bell tower is located at the crossing.
