This 1 ½ storey workers cottage was constructed in 1894. The simple design features a gable roof with wall dormers and bargeboard trim. A stained glass window accents the home’s exterior. With its lathe-turned columns, decorative brackets, and intricately carved trim, the open verandah is the cottage’s most prominent feature. The cottage belonged to the Harrison family for nearly 75 years. James C. Harrison and his wife, Jane, resided here with their children. James passed away in 1903, leaving the home to Jane, who remained at the cottage until her own death in 1929. The home then passed to their daughters, Lily and Mary Jane. Lily Harrison graduated from the Brandon Normal School in 1903. In 1907, she became a teacher at the Central School. Lily taught with the Brandon School Division until 1958. Harrison School was named in honour of the long-time employee. Lily resided at 226 21st Street until her death in 1968.
