This large one-storey home incorporates elements from both the Bungalow and Prairie styles. Built in 1945, the design features a low-pitched hipped roof, curved walls, and a recessed entrance. The numerous bay windows and massive brick chimney are the home’s most prominent features. The house was originally owned by Frederick W. Woodley, business manager for the Sun Publishing Co. After his death in 1954, the home was sold to Woodley’s employer, Ernest C. Whitehead. Whitehead was the owner and publisher of the Brandon Daily Sun. The newspaper was controlled by the Whitehead family for nearly one hundred years; Joseph B. Whitehead bought the majority of shares in 1903 and by 1911 had gained full control of the paper. Upon his father’s death in 1941, Ernest C. Whitehead assumed ownership of the company. His son, Lewis D. Whitehead, worked alongside him at the paper and would take over after Ernest’s own death in 1961. The Whitehead family continued to own and operate the Sun Publishing Co. until 2001.
