Brandon's first post office was a tent. At the entrance rested a soap box pierced by a slit for mail deposit. The post office was afterwards housed in a succession of structures until the Dominion Government constructed the Postal, Customs and Inland Revenue Building on Rosser Avenue in 1889-90. This massive Romanesque Revival style structure was demolished in the 1970s. The postal service, however, had moved in 1931 to the new Federal Building on Princess Avenue. In contrast to its roughly textured predecessor, Shillinglaw's 1930 building is a smooth surfaced Neo-classical design. Architectural elements, such as window moldings, pilasters and pediment, have been skillfully fashioned in shallow relief. The visual image is one of refined elegance.
