Built in 1892, the McDonald Block was designed by architect W.H. Shillinglaw. The design offers such details as decorative brickwork, pilasters, and intricate moulding detail along the roofline. Other decorative elements include a brick belt, recessed entrance, and carving inscription.

As the inscription suggests, the block was owned by John A. McDonald. McDonald and his partner, Frank Calvert, began their clothiers business at this location in 1892, under the name McDonald & Calvert. The business remained at this location for over sixty years.  In 1911, Calvert retired and the business became John A. McDonald. By 1921, the name had changed to John A. McDonald & Son Ltd. After John A. McDonald’s death in 1945, his son assumed control of the business.
