The City of Brandon Planning & Building Safety Department and the Brandon Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee jointly hosted an open house on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 for the public to seek input on the development of a new Heritage Management Plan and amendments to the Heritage Conservation By-law.
New Heritage Management Plan
A Heritage Management Plan is a tool to ensure the conservation of heritage resources and to help a community maximize the potential of its heritage resources. This document will guide the City of Brandon Council, Municipal Heritage
Advisory Committee and staff on creating achievable priorities pertaining to heritage matters. Brandon’s Heritage Management Plan 2013-2014 has long been expired. The proposed Heritage Management Plan intends to provide guidelines on heritage conservation over a ten-year timeframe.
Heritage Conservation By-law Amendments
The Heritage Conservation By-law governs municipal heritage matters, including, but not limited to, the establishment of the Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee and the designation and protection of heritage sites. In order to implement some of the new Heritage Management Plan’s initiatives and to update municipal legislation on heritage matters, the Heritage Conservation By-law is being amended. Highlights of those amendments are as follows:
- Administrative changes, such as revising the make-up of the Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee and staff supporting the Committee;
- Revising the process in assessing a property for heritage significance and designation; and
- Revising the process and requirements for work being done on municipal heritage sites.
